With Her Two Hands

Formerly known as Trades Lady Happy Hour, With Her Two Hands is a weekly podcast dedicated to celebrating women in the trades. Live, Candid and Unscripted conversations with women who work in the trades building, fixing and making things with their own two hands. Women make up less than 10% of trades people, and in some industry the numbers are as low as 2%. This podcast seeks to change that by shining a light on these incredible women. Celebrating them, sharing their struggles as women in incredibly male dominated fields, and increasing their visibility to attract, retain and create space for that number to start to increase. If she can see it she can BE it. And if HE can see it, he can BELIEVE it. Tune in for these candid conversations every week. Listen, learn, laugh and get to know the women who keep the world running.

This lady is a bad ass and she is not afraid to say so! Lindsey Wright happened into her restoration career when a friend gave her a job as a lot attendant at a collision repair shop. As she moved between various shops across different states, Lindsey continuously expanded her skill set. She progressed from buffing to replacing vinyl, decals, and emblems, then to paint-prepping, and eventually fabricating dump trucks. When she was  laid off from the truck shop, she embarked on a two year mechanics program at her local community college. Though she spent her 20’s “running from herself,” the hands-on training ultimately led to the creation of her own successful restoration shop, Lady Luck Restos.
Tune in as Lindsey candidly speaks about her rocky past, the challenges of balancing motherhood and career and about the influence Covid had on her brand new business. She attributes her newfound place in life to setting goals over expectations and her ability to see the value of herself.

What an incredible young woman! Faith Ortega grew up wrenching alongside her dad on various boat and car restorations, which naturally drew her to take automotive classes in school. Curious about exploring aviation mechanics in college, she discovered an unadvertised helicopter tech program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Upon touring the hangar where the program is held, it just clicked and she knew this was her next step. Despite initial nerves, she quickly realized that she could easily apply the principles of her automotive training and that she knew much more than she realized. Faith has since acquired both her Airframe and Powerplant licenses, giving her a “license to learn” on any part of a helicopter. Her favorite part of the job is flying in the helicopters after making repairs, and she now aspires to earn her helicopter pilot’s license.
You can hear the enthusiasm and passion Faith has for this industry in her voice as she gives us a detailed account of her path and advises future lady techs that you are never too young to start learning a trade.

Realizing the importance of being able to work on her own race vehicle drove her to dive into the wrenching side of the sport. Despite maintaining full time jobs outside of automotive, Tiffany and her husband started a side business building and fabricating track cars and also created a driving school! Recently, Tiffany was featured this year on Discovery Channel’s new series Getaway Driver!

Ana Broyles’ journey into the automotive world began in a high school shop class. Her interest was further sparked during summers working at a KTM motorcycle and sportscar shop. The techs there encouraged her curiosity, allowing her to observe and eventually get hands-on experience, setting the foundation for her future career. She was recruited by UTI where she thrived and which eventually landed her a job at BMW. Ana is now a Master Tech for BMW as well as a High Voltage Specialist. She decided to take on a 2002tii car restoration project, which turned out to be more challenging than she had anticipated. Progress was slow as she worked on it sporadically over several years. In search of a new challenge and to distract herself from the painstaking restoration project and the death of her father, Ana ventured into the world of racing. Although she found it thrilling, a serious accident that totaled her racing car made her reconsider the dangers and costs associated with the sport. Still craving the thrill of the sport, Ana transitioned to road and mountain bike racing.
Tune in as Ana shares how her father’s hobby inspired her automotive journey, how shop life surprised her and what it was like coming up as a female in the industry.
