113. Finding Her Fit: A Woman's Journey from Auto Tech to Heavy Equipment
This week on we meet Elizabeth “Betty” Jorgenson, a certified technician whose career journey highlights the critical issues of retention and respect in the trades. Elizabeth fell in love with mechanics while helping her dad in the shop during high school, and despite pushback in her hometown about women pursuing the trades, she followed her passion and earned her associate’s degree in Automotive Service Technology. But once in the industry, she faced poor working conditions and blatant sexism that eventually pushed her out of automotive and into the world of heavy equipment repair—where she found better pay, a healthier work environment, and the support she had long deserved. While her heart is still in automotive, Elizabeth’s story is a stark reminder of how much work there is to do to make the trades a place where women not only start—but stay.
Tune in for an honest and inspiring conversation that challenges the industry and celebrates one woman’s determination to thrive, wherever the work takes her.
